South likes: Gianni Piacentino at Fondazione Giuliani, Rome

Gianni Piacentino is one of those figures that is impossible to frame in a specific movement, especially if we consider the Italian artistic scene of the last fifty years. This exhibition, curated by Andrea Bellini, contributes to place the work of the artist among the most interesting episodes in recent Italian art history. Gianni Piacentino's practice is as complex as rich with references to the culture that influenced it.  read more.

South likes: Pierre Bismuth at Andquestionmark, Stockholm

Andquestionmark, an experimental space in the heart of Stockholm run by curator Stefanie Hessler and artist Carsten Höller, presented last night Pierre Bismuth's new project under the title YouTube Variations. Pierre Bismuth worked with different computer algorithms in order to transform sound material into musical scores. The scores are not a product of thought or chance, but the result of a series of computer translations, transliterations, and transcriptions of audio material.  read more.

South likes: Vanessa Safavi at The Breeder, Athens

The new solo exhibition of Vanessa Safavi, which is now presented at Breeder Gallery, underlies a visual metaphor of freudian psychology and surrealistic poetry. South likes: The Night of the Great Season at Kunsthalle Mulhouse, Mulhouse

Facing a young generation of Polish artists who retrieved the historical heritage of Surrealism in Poland, The Night of the Great Season traces the influence of this artistic movement from the 1930s until our days. Possibly due to the lumbering prevalence of a Catholic culture, or to other reasons related to the troubled history of Poland, Surrealism followed a different historical course in Poland than the one normally acknowledged in the book of Art History. read more.

South likes: Michael Smith and Ian Cheng at La Triennale di Milano, Milan

Inaugurating the new position of Edoardo Bonaspetti as curator of Visual Arts and New Media of the Triennale di Milano, these two solo shows sound like a declaration of intents, claiming a new space for showcasing young and experimental artists in Milan. South likes: Nina Canell at Camden Arts Centre, London

A string of nails held together by magnets delicately hanging from the wall evokes the mesmerising formal balance in Nina Canell's work. Water-filled tanks and oversized cables, which one can see only from specific perspectives thanks to mirrors and well devised illusions, works as a dynamic commentary to the temporal nature of experiencing a three-dimensional object. read more.

South likes: Anastasia Ax at Steinslad Berliner, Stockholm

Anastasia Ax, known for her powerful performances and installations, presents in this solo show a new identity mostly built around the two dimensional format. Ax has created sculptures and posters of brittle 50-years old archived papers, yellowed and faded by the ravages of time. Paper, a recurring medium in Ax' body of work, is taken as a symbol of intellectual culture and at the same time as a living, untameable material, programmed to decompose, be reshaped and finally revived. read more.

South likes: Florian Auer at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin

The solo show of Florian Auer at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Blue Prints, unfolds through an orchestration of surfaces: the manufacture of visual gags, ultimately achieving a perspectival manipulation of subjective viewpoints. The basic title of all the pieces, Not Yet Titled, ironically referring to the ordinary standard of “Untitled”, adds an informal element to the exhibition.  read more.

South likes: Manolis Baboussis at Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center, Athens

The two rows of chairs touching one another, the unfounded wall made of cement blocks raised between and on them. Protection or separation: a suspended dialogue that falls behind or an invitation to take down stereotypes? A sculptural installation made of indistinguishable elements and structural materials or a conceptual photographic image the instant just before or just after that split-second when the camera lens captures and freezes it for ever? read more.
