South likes: Benjamin Valenza at Komplot, Brussels

The show by Benjamin Valenza on view at Komplot constitutes the prosecution of an ongoing research on which the practice of the artist is based. With a multifarious approach, Valenza embraces diverse procedures, including sculpture, music poetry and performance. As a transgender second-generation Chinese American, Wu Tsang's work deals with issues of sexuality and identity, merging together a subjective perspective with fictional narratives. South likes: Disobedience Archive at SALT, Istanbul

Since 2005 Disobedience Archive has existed as an ongoing, itinerant archive and platform of discussion that travelled trough several institutions including MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology, USA; Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Italy; and Bildmuseet, Umeå, Sweden. A new two-person show of Theo Michael and Daniel Silver is now on view at the dynamic OMR gallery, which over the last thirty years has become a pioneer of Mexico City's contemporary art scene, presenting Mexican and international artists. A reassessment of the notion of mysticism in the current postcolonial Latin-American cultural context is the subject of the exhibition Ruta Mística (Mystical Path), organized by the Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO) and presented at Amparo Museum in Puebla. In a moment of ideological uncertainty and global instability, rather than an illustration of an idea, as the curator Gonzalo Ortega claims, the show is presented as a sort of diagnosis on the production of ten artists, who share the same interest of the revaluation of a concept. read more.

South likes: Kristian Sturi at NAM, Milan

The exhibition Gods and Fruits in NAM project revolves around a peculiar research on sacrality by the italian artist Kristian Sturi. Taking into account various forms of religiosity, Sturi focuses on the concept of Iconodulism (the veneration of images, as it is opposed to Iconoclasm). Religion, or better said a sense of divine alterity, has more than once been an impulse for the production and the distribution of images.  read more.
