South likes: 8th Berlin Biennale, Berlin

Taking an utterly different direction than the one attempted two years ago by Artur Żmijewski, the 8th edition of the Berlin Biennale, curated by Juan A. Gaitán, seems to resort to a much more solid curatorial practice in order to question the cultural development of the city. Spread over three very different venues, the 8th Berlin Biennale proposes narratives and perspectives that pursue a political discourse and at the same time set in motion a dialogue with the identity of the city, especially with its cultural establishment. read more.

South likes: Pietro Bonfanti at Spazio Polaresco, Bergamo

It is the voice of Mussolini the one speaking from the balcony of the external courtyard of the Polaresco, an example rationalist architecture built during the fascist era. A montage from fragments of speeches by the Italian dictator has been realised by Pietro Bonfanti, to reinterpret the space and above all a discourse and a rhetoric that sound unsettlingly familiar in current times and historical circumstances. read more.

The hardcore punk band Fitzcarraldo, composed of Andrew Birk, Nico Colón, and Yann Gerstberger, disbanded in 2001 during a tour in South America, after discussing the book Empire by Toni Negri and Michael Hardt. South likes: Danai Anesiadou at Buenos Tiempos Int., online

“We differ from a normative gay and lesbian agenda because we reject assimilationist politics that heterosexualize fags and dykes and queens etc. We want to be explicit in the declaration of our faggotry.” Thus explains Alberto García del Castillo, chief curator of the newly founded online platform Buenos Tiempos International. Describing itself as an online exhibition space for visual art, Buenos Tiempos, Int. engages socially and politically with queerness, difference and otherness through strategies such as the “exercise of wave-blowing-blow-jobbing”. read more.

South likes: Céline Condorelli at Chisenhale, London

For her commission at Chisenhale, Céline Condorelli keeps the clean, industrial setting of the gallery seemingly intact; yet, the gallery door is gone and a window is revealed. Behind a large, semi-transparent golden curtain—a recurring form in Condorelli' s work—a peculiar environment is set up, which brings in mind a research space. read more.
