South likes: Forget Amnesia at Fiorucci Art Trust, Stromboli

The fourth edition of Volcano Extravaganza, curated by Haroon Mirza with Milovan Farronato, is inspired by the club Amnesia, opened in Ibiza in 1976, together with the kind of forgetfulness that in a small Mediterranean island makes people oblivious of the rest of the world. In the suggestive landscape offered by the Sicilian island of Stromboli, due to the volcanic eruptions, to the seismic activity or to the intensity of the ten-day program, it might be justifiable if someone forgot to have forgotten. The event devised by Haroon Mirza works halfway between a space of encounter and an art festival to show and produce new works. Celia Hempton created a new body of paintings inspired by the volcanic eruptions, with the title of Ejecta. Ed Atkins presented readings of several recent texts and surrogate performances. A project by Trisha Baga and Jessie Stead requires visitors to swap their sunglasses with 3D glasses in order to admire the room environment produced over a number of days spent on the island before the start of the programme.
While it is not clear if art has gone on holidays or holidays have gone artsy, thanks to the Fiorucci Art Trust many professionals don’t have to choose between a sunset on the seaside and a performative lecture. One thing that is quite clear, however, is that whether you love highbrow holidays or not, a Mediterranean island is the perfect location for a cosmopolitan summer retreat-cum-jamboree.
