It Means It Means! – A Drawn Exhibition by Charles Avery & Tom Morton
Museum of Art, Onomatopoeia and Pilar Corrias, London, UK
20 November, 2013 – 11 January, 2014
Charles Avery creates an imaginary exhibition, comprising of essential works proceeding from the most crucial moments of art history, compiled and curated by Tom Morton. Avery relies on the traditional medium of drawing to provide an unconventional documentation for a fictional show filled with the powerful and intriguing essence of two-dimensional means of expression. With a fresh view on the curatorial practice, each drawing presents a different room of an illusionary museum, which is then placed in the ‘real world’ in the spaces of Pilar Corrias Gallery. The viewers witness the coexistence of artworks such as Goya’s The Dog and Imponderabilia by Marina Abramovic and Ulay. The residents of The Island, a fictional realm created by Avery’s drawings, are portrayed as visitors of this imaginary show and accompany the viewer to explore this “exhibition within the exhibition”. An original approach to the obscure relation between the artist, the curator and the viewer, this exhibition questions the value and the function of documentation, while giving us the opportunity to become part of a fascinating simulated art show.
