The term psychedelia comes from ancient Greek, composed of two words, psykhé (soul) and dêlos (visible, clear), and it was coined by Humphry Osmond to define experiences that “free thought from the superstructures of social patterns.” The investigation carried out by Maria Adele Del Vecchio’s exhibition examine the perceptive/cognitive processes of the mind from a precise political stance, which takes into account personal, historical, and spatial issues related to a psychedelic path towards the “liberation of the self”. A forty-minute audio track, realised with the collaboration of Neapolitan musician and sound designer Marco Messina, merges together sounds from the psychedelic American and English music of the 1960s in a piece that attempts to trigger a different perception in the listener. The monochrome paintings, on the other hand, stimulate a reflection on how we perceive colours, their possible shadings, and their materiality. Delving into the mysterious insight of an unrestrained perception, forms and experiences take a radically different look on the presence of the other: as in the series of photographs Open Naked Eye, where different faces melt into each other and with their coloured surroundings; or like in William, where a wig on an amethyst geode is all we need to take the inorganic a step closer to the human.
