South likes: Secret Codes at Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo

What is taking place for the 40th anniversary of this historical São Paulo gallery is a blissful parade of more or less flashy names, yet not without reason and not without the mindfulness of an experienced curator. In the exhibition Secret Codes, Agustín Pérez Rubio deals with issues of language and communication in relation to art and culture. A relevant selection of works from the sixties onwards is arranged through a historical positioning: from Samuel Beckett’s Quad I and Cildo Meireles’ Insertions Into ideological Circuits, to the works of Julieta Aranda and Dora García, the exhibition traverses thematic cornerstones, such as the relation between form and content, proto-writing, signs and symbolism. Aspects of performativity as well as references to codifications of time are also present throughout the show. The curatorial narrative suggests groupings between works that discuss the structure of language, mass culture and the mysticism of secret codes.
