Signal to Noise*
Gallery Niklas Belenius, Stockholm, Sweden
14 December, 2013 – 19 January, 2014
A lonely performer jumping repeatedly over a gigantic mechanical skipping rope created by Amalia Pica, recounts at the same time the mundane events of her week in exact detail. While the performer’s voice gets increasingly tired, it reveals the effort of everyday speech and oral communication. The exercise continues until exhaustion forces the performer to stop.
The exhibition proposes a methodology that considers irrational successions, illogical communications, and fatal non sequiturs. It explores what happens if we intentionally do things in an a-logical way, disrupting the established forms of response and linear communication.
* Signal to Noise is a measure used in science to indicate the quality of a desired signal, compared to the level of background noise. It refers to the degree of useful information, measured against disturbances and irrelevant data be it in sound, biochemical signaling, or spam in online forums.
