South likes: Disobedience Archive at SALT, Istanbul

Since 2005 Disobedience Archive has existed as an ongoing, itinerant archive and platform of discussion that travelled trough several institutions including MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology, USA; Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Italy; and Bildmuseet, Umeå, Sweden. The exhibition, curated by Marco Scotini and Andris Brinkmanis, features the installation design specifically made for SALT Beyoğlu by Herkes İçin Mimarlık. In this occasion the Disobedience Archive will showcase internationally sourced materials spanning from the 1970s Parco Lambro uprising in Italy to the recent protest movement originated in Gezi Park in 2013. The archive is in fact a collection or “atlas” that investigates strategies of resistance, presented “as a network of open topics, brought together by artists, activists, film producers, philosophers and political groups”. Cataloguing a manifold range of civil actions, Disobedience Archive deals with the relationships between political discourse and artistic practice. The one where art and politics overlap is indeed an area where civil participation to politics can test the boundaries of a fixed shape or form, being flexible in a constant state of becoming. With this exhibition at SALT, the Disobedience Archive lands in a particularly hot context, as for almost one year Istanbul has been the centre of a protest that involved Turkish citizens in a intense political struggle. The research on movements of resistance from the 1970s to today is therefore an essential contribution that highlight connections, analogies, and dialogues between the turkish uprisings and a more extensive network of global turmoil.
