The exhibition C.P. Cavafy at the Plato’s Academy Leisure Park could be listed among the most vibrant responses to this year’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of the great Greek poet C.P. Cavafy. Ten artists were invited to create works inspired by Cavafy that would be installed in Plato’s Academy Leisure Park, stressing the poet’s interest in ancient Greek thought. The result is an exhibition experienced as a stroll in the park that, at times, feels more like a spasmodic time travel. Ten video pieces hosted in scattered pavilions interact with ancient remnants of Plato’s Academy, mundane benches and a colourful playground. Recurring aspects of the show are the tension between historical specificity and atemporality as well as the notions of topos and polis. Even though all works are videos, there is an impressive variety of thematic and methodological approaches through which the artists relate to Cavafy’s poetry.
