If we were to trace the object—in its broader sense—in Tino Sehgal’s performances, we could say that it lies in the ambiguous forms fashioned through the fleeting relationship between the performer and the viewer. Essas Associações, originally conceived for Tate Modern’s Unilever Series, was nominated for the Turner Prize back in 2012. A group of people is scattered between the visitors, walking, running and moving in patterns; at times, they choose visitors to share with them their innermost thoughts. As controversial as it may sound, Essas Associações can be seen as the planned context for impulsive conversations. Sehgal initiates a series of short-term associations between individuals, investigating the multifaceted nature of human interaction, while engaging with the notion of spontaneity: the anxiety that normally accompanies the processes preceding the beginning of a conversation seem to evaporate through the simultaneous exchange of secrets, advices and confessions. However, the instructed movements followed by the performers could suggest the transformation of this seemingly liberating experience to a rather intrusive one. At the same time it raises a question: do we need a carefully designed environment to relate to each other? Sehgal manages to transform the notion of social norms, as well as the way these affect our affiliations, into this thought-provoking performance.
