If one thing is clear in the movement of rise and fall of empires, is that classical heritage dies hard. Crisis or not, the culture of ancient Greece first, and Roman Empire later, had a consistent part in the foundation of Europe. In order to understand how this heritage influenced contemporary artists, the works selected for the exhibition at Galeri Manâ, Who Shall Deliver Us From The Greeks and Romans?, approach classical culture from several different perspectives, elaborating on the possible outcomes of the reinterpretation of antique canons. Aslı Çavuşoğlu uses a roman terracotta handle to realise a small sculpture that ambiguously betrays it ancient origin. Adrian Paci’s video, The Column, tells the story of a piece of marble that, after being extracted from a chinese cave, is carved into a column during its transport to Europe on a mercantile ship. Marble is again the material chosen by Daniel Silver to portrait a man with a beard, ironically reminiscent of renown images of Greek philosophers. Jonathan Monk takes a different stance on marble, using Jesmonite (a mix of plaster and resin polymers) to approach the visual influence of Roman portraiture; the sculpture on display at Galeri Manâ, got its nose broken by Pier Paolo Calzolari, with a gesture that questions its modernity and class the work with more ancient relics. The question raised by the title of the show might remain unanswered, and yet is a good question—really, who shall deliver us from the Greeks and the Romans? However the selection made by curator Cristiana Perrella gives a diligent insight on the weight of classical culture in contemporary art, between discontinuity, hybridization, and monumentality.
