A Colony for Them

The “Colony” that Sam Pulitzer created at Artists Space, New York, is an immersive environment made of different spaces separated by screens that interrupt and regulate the viewer’s sight lines. The colony is in fact rather an inventory of visions, outlining a community of artists who share a penchant for occultish imagery that commonly circulates in sub-cultures of music, literature and gaming. On the walls of the exhibition, images commissioned to a number of graphic artists simulates the encounter between the dispersed inhabitants of a virtual exile. The notion of the avatar bounces between different realities, each relying on different constituencies: from fin de siècle symbolism to dystopic science fictional plots through an elusive and transgressive insight on the bodily existence of virtual experiences. The regimes of visions created by the spatial partition of the space reproduce a state of things where the avoidance of eye contact replicates subjective responses to the functioning of virtual retreats. A text by author Jeff Nagy spaces out these images with a sci-fi plot envisioning the discrepancy between corporeal, cyber-organic, and virtual subjectivity. Given this conceptual backdrop, the artist-made colony is a place, imaginary or not, where to start asking the question posed by Sam Pulitzer: “What constitutes a community that meets virtually only by lines of sight, or is avowedly avoiding eye contact?”
