Andquestionmark, an experimental space in the heart of Stockholm run by curator Stefanie Hessler and artist Carsten Höller, presented on March 20th 2014 Pierre Bismuth’s new project under the title YouTube Variations.
Pierre Bismuth worked with different computer algorithms in order to transform sound material into musical scores. The scores are not a product of thought or chance, but the result of a series of computer translations, transliterations, and transcriptions of audio material. Bismuth fed YouTube clips into the software, including musical parts but also sound and speech extracts. The music scores that resulted from a first series of operations were then re-processed by using more conventional methods of composition involving issues of choice, reference, structure, and aesthetics. The result was a piece in 5 movements for four instruments: cello, clarinet, flute, and percussions. A concise piece, immensely difficult to play, challenging the relationship between man and machine while at the same time commemorating a technocratic world.

YouTube Variations is the first composition for several instruments based on this protocol, and was performed for the very first time at Andquestionmark with: Daniel Borgegård Älgå (clarinet), Pelle Halvarsson (cello), Magnus Nordén (kit percussion), Anna Petraskevica (flute), coordinated by Robin McGinley.
