For the very first time, a major figure of the international art scene, Philippe Parreno, was entrusted with carte blanche to use the entire space of Palais de Tokyo (22.000 m3). Parreno, certainly one of the leading characters of a generation that in the 1990s exploited the diversity of media to change our perception of art, explored and redefined the exhibition space as a film set, taking it as a medium and orchestrating a visual choreography that lasts at least two hours. Parreno collaborates with other artists and curates a full-scale experiment where the visitor is asked to participate in every sense to a concatenation of manifold scenarios: children demonstrating for “no more reality”on a huge LED screen; the football player Zinedine Zidane filmed from seventeen angles at once; Stravinsky’s Petrushka replayed on four Diskalvier pianos; sizzling neons and light bulbs flickering like theatrical marquees hung from the ceiling in a dark room; Marilyn Monroe’s voice recreated by computer, portraying every detail of the room where she lived, while the camera shows us what she sees. In the mean time the Manga character Annlee, embodied by Tino Sehgal, asks: “What is the difference between a sign and melancholia?” A sentimental fictional experience that didn’t miss to mesmerize its audience.
