For his first exhibition at Maccarone, Phanos Kyriacou revamps the exhibition space with a site-specific intervention, presenting a series of sculptures and a multichannel video installation. Over the past decade, Kyriacou has been exploring various media interventions within space, indulging into poetic manipulations of sculptural form and creating an unexpected dialogue with and about his environment. His work incorporates found objects as well as commissioned pieces often infused with interventions by local craftsmen. With an awareness of the intricacies of materials implanted in locations and structures, the re-arrangements of the spatial and the temporal elements create a highly aestheticised, abstract setting for the viewer. Several of the sculptural works feature different-sized objects upon plywood structures. Through a reshaping of experience they hint at a stage for continued exploration of informal aesthetics. The new works on display unearth an insight of Kyriacou’s practice for its first presentation to a New York audience.
