For a down-to-earth exhibition like this, Keep It Real is a serious title. The slogan, supposedly an invitation to authenticity and unpretentiousness, here sounds like a call to pragmatism: in certain circumstances there’s no need for curatorial embellishment. In other words, sometimes a curator can devise discursive widgets to hold together a group of artists and their differences in terms of practice and vision; sometimes not. In the case of Keep It Real, it seems clear, it worked better with no strings attached. Then it is possible for a group of artists to set up an auto-produced show with simple means and convincing outcomes. Aside from the lofty venue, spacious enough to impress the children of post-industrial Milan, the exhibition confirm piece by piece a solid set of aesthetic values. Two oversized heads by the duo Alis/Filliol play on the ambiguity between deformity and recognisable forms, between organic and inorganic. Another artists’ duo, Invernomuto, produced a wax replica of the grotto of Lourdes at Vernasca. Gianandrea Poletta ironically attempts a moonwalk, fabricating an automotive pair of trainers set in motion by vibrators. A coherence that is difficult to thematise emerge from this gathering of works. If it is not in terms of artistic practice that this gathering takes place, it casts instead a clear vision of what’s going in Milan, one of the most vital cultural districts in Italy as well as in Europe. And a polyphonic intervention like this can be in some cases more honest than a curated show, for it reveals the underlying tensions and cooperations that eventually make a scene.
