In “Sub-fusc love-feast”, Heather Philipson (b. 1978, based in London) mainly deals with representations of appropriated nature and how these can be inscribed or relate with the human body. The exhibition spreads throughout the spacious galleries of DCA in a fairly dense way easily passing as a single complex installation. Visitors walk through a septic tank, video-projections, animal sculptures hanging from the ceiling, plastic pipes and upside-down two-dimensional imagery. Fakeness becomes representation and vice versa, while sceneries such as grazing fields, zoos and botanical gardens are depicted and projected, with the occasional visual reference to naked human body and sex. Apart from this excess of visuality, written text is found in different forms throughout the media Philipson uses, attesting to her literary production as a poet. However, no hierarchy among the visual and the literal is intended. In fact, the artist conflates the constituents of her vocabulary in an equal way, with the most captivating blurring being that of gazes and uttered voices. There are moments of exciting uncertainty about who is actually speaking (a narrator/the artist/the sheep) and to whom (viewers/herself/her loved ones). “Sub-fusc love-feast” encapsulates so succinctly what it wants to thematise that it almost re-triggers all those half-formed thoughts/sensations experienced when interacting with representations of nature, consumption and waste.
