By using reels of censored erotic material from the Afghan film archive, Goshka Macuga creates a montage-film addressing issues of sexuality in the Arab world, female oppression and twisted politics. While witnessing a strange collage of sex scenes ranging from James Bond movies to Afghan films and Bollywood, a female voice narrates stories of violence and oppression, of the Taliban rule and the Sharia, while describing a general effort to eliminate women’s presence from the public sphere.
In re-arranging the material, Macuga presents a new comparative reading to the conflicting perceptions, norms, pressures, and tolerated exposure of physical intimacy in Afghan and Western cultures. With a language as bold as the visual content, Macuga’s new commissioned work takes the form of political activism while striving to escape the trap of post-colonial mentality.
The exhibition includes excerpts of correspondence, exposing under a close scope the obstacles, contradictions and opportunities that resulted in approaching the material.
