Anastasia Ax, known for her powerful performances and installations, presents in this solo show a new identity mostly built around the two dimensional format. Ax has created sculptures and posters of brittle 50-years old archived papers, yellowed and faded by the ravages of time. Paper, a recurring medium in Ax’ body of work,  is taken as a symbol of intellectual culture and at the same time as a living, untameable material, programmed to decompose, be reshaped and finally revived.
These tattered yellowed sheets of paper, in the word of the artist the remnants of a forgotten residence, are closely related to Ax’ previous series Exile, which was developed through a kind of brutal transformation. Ax constructed an imaginary refugee camp only to go berserk and smash it into pieces afterwards. In the end what remains are just the ruins of dried plaster, dust and an apocalyptic feeling. Swallowed Fear arises from the same idea, but instead of creating a concrete physical world this project focuses on exploring the imaginary. Cryptic ink symbols form a wordless language, whispering about inner emotions, in a moment frozen in time.
