Goin’ Blind
Parkour, Lisbon, Portugal
12 -24 April, 2014
Borrowing the name of a song from Melvins, “Goin’ Blind” (1993), João Marçal presents a new series of works that continues the artist’s research in abstract formalism. The inspiration for this works comes from the residual products of the industrial process of packaging. Elaborating on the visual analogy between the sky and a disposed piece of cardboard that was part of a yoghurt package, Marçal emancipates the triviality of residual materials employed in everyday consumption with a careful juxtaposition of forms and colours. The serial repetition of this enigmatic abstract shapes make an ambiguous and discreet use of the exhibiting space. The paintings hang in line above the entrance, leaving plenty of free space on the walls and affirming their presence as a bright procession of color and shapes. Also thanks to the seductive visual impact of his visual riddles, João Marçal offers, with simplicity and dedication, another spot-on reading of one of the most interesting venues in Lisbon.
