Strengthlessness
Galerie Perrotin, Paris, France
18 January – 1 March, 2014

Known for his thought-provoking piece Retouch, where he spray-painted over Mondrian’s paintings in Centre Pompidou, Ivan Argote undoubtedly has the most astonishing approach to the notion of the monument. With a poetic yet playful mood, the artist rearranges and transforms symbols and mindsets of everyday life, offering the viewer an original perspective on things one often takes for granted. For his solo show, Strengthlessness, Argote sets forth a series of caustic statements, while physically reversing the idea of symbolism by bending Paris’ Luxor Obelisk. The sculptural pieces and photographic collages are accompanied by the artist’s latest films, which emphasise his innovative philosophy. The viewer wanders in a space filled with objects materialising the up-and-coming artist’s unique insight of the world as we (think) we know it; objects that could signify the initiation of future innovative ideologies and mentalities.
